Today (25 Sept 2024), one of our consulting clients is standing at day No. 10 of the 90 days of "Practicing-Flipping-Learning" within the OpenSpaceBeta approach to transformation. For more about this approach to organizational transformation, visit openspacebeta.com. First, two clarifying remarks:
I am not sharing the client company's name, nor any details about its business, as this update is supposed to give you insights into the practicalities of Beta Transformation, not to provide intricacies about the company's business or internal affairs. At a later point, the client may decide to share more about its transformation, or not.
The photo above shows the session grid for the company's OS1 event, and Silke Hermann, who acted as OpenSpace facilitator. As you can see, there were up to 12 parallel sessions, and the OpenSpace meeting lasted for three consecutive session slots.
Things that have already happened since OS1
Since OpenSpace Meeting 1 (OS1) many topics have come up at the client company. 3 collectively defined #WorkStreams (larger, result-oriented initiatives) and seven "ZigZags" (more compact, result-oriented action packages are being worked upon, with all kinds of flips and consequences involved. Both WorkStreams and ZigZags must be concluded within the 90 days.

Things are starting to shift at the company, and different patterns of action are being practiced noticeably, indeed. A few examples:
Yesterday, all previous "departments" were dissolved, and "department heads" titles/positions removed, for good.
The Cell Structure Design draft looked quite compelling at the end of day 4 of 90 already. It will surely keep evolving a bit more. But there is now recognition that "business cells of just 5 to 7 people are feasible", and that the cell structure's "positive impact on work and potential" will be massive and manifold. If you want to learn more about how we approach the development of the Cell Structure, check out our two research papers on Cell Structure Design Patterns, here https://lnkd.in/e3W5e_WA and here https://lnkd.in/eJSjW27M
Relative Targets and Relative Reporting are being worked upon, and Fast Close capabilities (to provide "open books") are developed, with pretty profound changes in the underlying finance and invoicing processes being undertaken. For more on Relative Targets: www.relativetargets.com
A few fun facts, or details that come to mind from this case
Massive weekly meetings and committees were ended (liberating plenty of time and energy)
Internal name abbreviations were dropped
A daily sales ticker for everyone (!) was installed, improving transparency and raising awareness for the business and company finances
More meetings and joint work sessions are happening "in physical presence", instead of "remotely", which already seems to somewhat vitalize interaction and discourse.
